My Students
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!" - Dr. Seuss
My first graders are going places, and my job is to help them get there! What better way to do that than by encouraging their love of learning through reading.
My classroom is full of 20 vibrant, hard-working first graders who love learning.
They are readers, writers, thinkers, mathematicians, scientists, problem solvers, and the reason I love coming to school each and every day!
They attend a rural Title 1 school, meaning that over 50% of our population qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Many of my students lack access to learning materials outside of school, which can impact their achievement. Although they work their hardest and have made great progress since the beginning of the school year, a majority are still reading significantly below grade level.
My Project
The best way to get my students to become better readers is by getting their noses in books. My students will use these leveled readers in a variety of ways. They will be used for guided reading instruction and independent reading practice. Each week, each student takes home "Books in a Bag" which are on their reading level. This ensures that they have access to appropriate reading materials each night.
I have also started a Reading Club for my students, which takes place once a week before and after school. I am THRILLED to say that 9 of my 20 students are attending! These books will help enhance this additional instruction. Will this one extra hour a week help them get on grade level? I don't know - but I do know that every little bit of instruction and practice will help them get to where they're going!
This project is going to put appropriate leveled texts in the hands of my students who need them the most.
These will help supplement our already growing classroom library, and will help bridge the gap between learning at school and learning at home.
They will make a HUGE difference in my students' lives, both in and out of the classroom!
