By the time my students come to my fifth grade classroom, they have spent more than half of their school career learning to read. At this point, they are eager to use those reading skills to learn more about the world and for enjoyment.
When asked their favorite time of the day, my students all agree - Sustained Silent Reading!
I have shortened the time we spend in the computer lab working on an individualized reading and math learning program to allow a longer block of time for pleasure reading. During this time, my students get hooked on authors, genres, topics, and series. And as much as they love reading, they love talking to each other about what they are reading!
We are a community of readers who use this wonderful skill to deepen our understanding of language, point of view, and academic content; as well as grow in our own ability to write more skillfully like the authors who excite us!
My Project
With such ample exposure to quality literature at the primary ages, it is vital to continue its availability and use in the intermediate grades. One challenge intermediate teachers face is keeping their students hooked on reading. Supplementing our reading curriculum with A Series of Unfortunate Events, an engaging series of 13 books, will nurture the lifelong love of reading.
Unfortunately, the books that I purchased fifteen years ago are falling apart; volunteers go through the books to make sure the yellowed pages are in the correct order as the binding does not hold the pages anymore.
I also do not have any of the books 11-13, so students have to hope our library's one copy of each is available. As this series is at the top of half of my students' favorites, I feel obliged to provide these materials for them.
Three of each novel in the A Series of Unfortunate Events series will allow groups of students to read these books at home and at school, and talk about them when they are reading. It would also allow me to use them in our guided reading circles for literary instruction and vocabulary development.
