Help me give my students colorful, engaging books to help them create their own learning about garbage, recycling, and how to help the Earth!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I recently returned to teaching second grade in an urban school.
Despite many challenges, my students come school each day eager to learn how to learn and drive their own learning.
My students love school because they experience thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their math, writing, reading, science, and social studies skills.
This often takes monetary funding I am not given by my state or school district. Unforgettable learning experiences in second grade help my students retain learning in their long-term memories.
My Project
Having small sets of informational text allows my students to feel like they discovered the answers to their science questions.
Second graders love learning science, so what better way to improve their reading and writing skills than through science reading and writing?
The students will use these books to learn about garbage and how to keep most of the garbage we throw away out of landfills. Then, they will use their knowledge to create informational books of their own and use the rubber bands to bind their final drafts. This type of learning puts students in charge of their learning and it becomes learning they will never forget!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
