My students need high interest books to read. They love graphic novels including: Toon into Comic Starter set, Geronimo Stilton, Boxcar Children, Mighty Mighty Monsters.
Maya Angelou once said, "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep continuing needs, is good for him." My goal is to get my students reading more books, more often, and more enthusiastically. I know that building my graphic novels selection will do this!
As 100% of my school's students receive free breakfast and lunch, my students are coming from homes where books may not always be a priority.
This doesn't mean, however, that the children don't want to read-they have an unbridled passion for searching, finding, and reading the right book. They exhibit pride in the responsibility of checking out books and bringing them back on time. I am amazed on a daily basis how many students I can help to check out books even before school begins in the morning.
We are an urban, minority, Title 1 school. We are also a leadership school following Sean Covey's "7 Habits of Happy Kids". On a daily basis, we are striving to make good decisions and help students be the best that they can be. As a whole, our students are positive, respectful, and fun-loving. Even at this young age, many of my students see the value of a good book and how it can transport them to new worlds.
My Project
I am asking for 4 sets of graphic novels for the school library. The "Toon into Comics Genre Study Starter" set will help my transitional readers build their confidence. The "Mighty Mighty Monsters" set will also encourage my struggling readers as they can use picture clues as they read. A classic series reborn which my students love, "The Boxcar Children" will add variety. Lastly, the "Geronimo Stilton Graphic Novels" set fits perfectly for the 4th and 5th grade students that need a high/low combination.
Students will have access in the school's media center for checking out all of the books requested in this project. With an attractive display and book talks to both students and faculty, I expect these books to fly off the shelves. A lesson on designing their own comics is planned for later in the year.
I envision increased circulation of all books as my reluctant readers find their niche and all students become more confident that the library has just the "right" book for them.
As the Media Specialist, I can't overemphasize the impact that an influx of materials will have for my all of the students.
My collection is aging quickly and recent funds have not allowed for the upkeep of one of the most popular formats of popular fiction_graphic novels. These books allow for high interest while not penalizing for lower reading abilities. My goal is to get my students returning to the media center multiple times per week as they are continually reading and need new materials.
