My Project
Every day, my photography students at Leilehua High School amaze me with their talent and creativity. They have this unique ability to find beauty in the hardships of daily life. Many of them dream of becoming professional photographers, and I wholeheartedly believe they have what it takes to succeed. Last year, they entered the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, the nation’s most prestigious youth art competition, and received the second-highest number of Regional Gold Keys in Hawaiʻi! One student also advanced to nationals and received a National Gold Medal for her work!
To keep nurturing this extraordinary talent, my students urgently need new camera equipment.
While we are grateful for the small supply of camera donations that we do have, most cameras lack the essential features that students need. As a Title I school, many students also lack access to working smartphones or personal cameras. This has been especially limiting for my advanced students, who cannot receive crucial lessons that require specific gear.
If we can reach our fundraising goal, we will be able to purchase:
-5 Canon EOS Rebel T7 cameras
-5 Canon EF-S 18-55mm lenses
-5 Canon EF 75-300mm lenses
-5 SanDisk 64GB memory cards
-5 Insignia memory card readers
As a proud alumni who began my own photo career in this class, this program and community mean the world to me. It changed my life by helping me find my voice and giving me a sense of purpose. I am committed to doing the same for my students by teaching them how to create impactful, meaningful work about Hawaiʻi.
