Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Writing is one of the most challenging subjects for a teacher to teach and for students to learn. To improve my teaching skills, I attended a week long writing institute this summer. I emerged energized and inspired, with an organized set of strategies and a wish list of materials.

I teach a very diverse group of students, including six English language learners.

Many of my students come from working class families who have limited resources to invest in their education. Despite these challenges, my students' parents are involved in their children's education and my students work hard and are extremely eager to learn.

My Project

My students need several children's books, pencils, and paper to help them develop as writers. The books I am requesting will provide the spark for the explosion of stories which my students will tell. My students will begin their year as writers by being immersed in great writing. Upon hearing each of these great books, they will remember their own stories and choose from these with which to write. These books will also serve as mentor texts. We will examine each as a class analyzing the qualities which make them great writing. My students will then use these books as models to improve their writing. The pencils will insure we have something to write with. The yellow paper will allow students to create drafts that are easy to distinguish among their other writing. The chart paper and sharpies will allow me to prepare charts, procedures, and exemplars to help students with the writing process.

Your donations will help provide many wonderful books and some important writing tools which my students will use on a daily basis to improve their writing skills.

I thank you in advance for your generosity!
