Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Newcomer (English as a Second Language) English Language Arts (mixed grades 6-8), English Language Development, and ESL Math courses to very diverse groups of students. My 6th-8th graders are intelligent and inquisitive students. Some of these students were born in this country, while others have only been here for a short time.

The Newcomers are recently emigrated from multiple countries including: Syria, Honduras, Brazil, El Salvador, Philippines, and India.

These students are highly motivated to learn English to fit in and survive in their remarkable new environment. Students represent different parts of the world all coming together in one place with the same main goals: to increase their knowledge and become proficient in English.

The middle school students are attending school at an exciting time with new changes in curriculum. We are incorporating technology into each class meeting. These students are learning their school subjects in fresh and exciting ways while developing 21st Century skills. However, we are also still using traditional books and practicing note-taking skills.

My Project

I am hoping to make sure each student has their own supplies readily available for a smooth learning experience! To engage student participation in class, students answer questions on personal whiteboards. We go through the pens for these really fast! It would be great to have our class supplies refreshed so everyone always has a working marker.

My students are always in need of refills of the basics like scissors and glue, especially during the current concern over students sharing materials and germs.

My students take all of their notes in different colors to make connections and differentiations, symbolize parts of sentences, and define steps while solving math problems. Some of the colors can be hard to find in local stores. I don't want anyone to miss out on learning opportunities because they don't have the same (or similar) colors!
