This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a low income, inner city school where students come from many different situations and home lives. These children rely on education as the main way out of their current home situation and violent and drug ridden communities.
My students struggle with having an environment that is welcoming, safe, cozy and warm.
Therefore, this year, I want to ensure that my students are coming back to school in a well-decorated, warm classroom with good lighting and alternative seating so they are able to feel comfortable and safe, while engaging in learning.
Many of our students are facing unstable and uncertain housing situations. Some of our students are in foster care, homeless shelters, or simply do not have a stable living environment which prevents them from performing their best and actively engaging in the learning process. Having a safe space, that is cozy, well-lit, welcoming and provides them with a space to deescalate and focus is imperative to their success inside and outside of the classroom.
My Project
This will allow my students to be warmly welcomed back into their learning environment where they are provided with knowledge, enrichment and the skills they will need to be kind, successful human beings! Our students face many obstacles and they deserve to be able to feel calm, safe, and welcome in the environment where they learn. This will help my students academic achievement and mental health. Having a classroom where they can clear their minds, focus on learning, retreat and meditate amongst instability and chaos will allow the students to strive to be their best!
