This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a high poverty school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are thoughtful and enthusiastic learners.
They come to class each day eager to see their school family and tackle academic challenges. I am constantly amazed by their ingenuity and desire to be better than they were yesterday.
In my classroom we focus on becoming learners, not just learning material. Hopefully the skills they acquire are ones that will benefit them throughout their academic journey.
My Project
A rug will help the students feel more comfortable when we sit in a circle for our morning meetings and then our mini-lessons. Right now we are using Dollar Tree bins for our journals, folders, and books that might not make it to the end of the school year! The storage containers will be a long-term replacement. I've found that having gentle music playing and soft lighting helps set the tone for a calm day. Since our room no longer get direct sunlight (an awning was built), lamps are a necessity.
My dream is to have a classroom that feels like a second home to my students.
This is difficult with hard tile floors, harsh fluorescent lighting, and falling apart Dollar Tree storage containers. These items will help create a more comfortable, calming, and natural learning environment.
