As the technology integration specialist of a K-5 school with a population of over 50% economically disadvantaged, I know that the single most significant benefit that technology can provide to my students is an “even playing field”. Having state-of-the-art technology in our classrooms affords my students the opportunity to prepare for a successful future. My students look forward to visiting the computer resource lab for the weekly lesson. Implementing a project where the students use the computer and various technology components, to which many of the students do not have access outside of our school, is a very motivating factor and has a positive effect on attendance. I have heard students in the hallway say, “Tomorrow is computer lab day! I can’t wait!”
Living in a military area with four major military bases within ten miles, over 20% of our students reside with an active military family member. These military students are not only dealing with every day school life, but also with the absence of a parent in the home, as well as the constant concern for the parent’s safety. Most of these students do not have access to an iPod or the money or knowledge of using technology to communicate with a deployed parent. Providing this hardware, software, and training will allow our military students to stay in contact with their loved ones and share their daily school life.
Funding for this project would allow continuous communication between my military students and their deployed family members. The availability of 4 iPod Nano mp3 players would allow the students to create and view podcasts which would be exchanged with the deployed family members, keeping those serving overseas "in the loop" of school activities and events.
Your help will ensure that our military students will be able to communicate with their loved ones serving overseas. In fulfilling this need for communication, our students will then be able to fully focus on a successful school year.
