This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My inquisitive students come from a low socioeconomic area where access to hands-on materials in their homes is very limited. My school also has limited funding for these materials, whether they be for math, literacy, science, or art. Consequently, my students have lacked these essentials during this pandemic.
My students all receive free lunch, and some come from foster homes.
My classroom is one of the only places where their thirst for exploring is met. Therefore, I strive to foster an environment where all their questions have an answer or create new questions to explore.
My second graders are a highly inquisitive bunch of thoughtful thinkers. Having materials in my classroom is essential to cultivating a rich learning environment. I love to see that glint in their eye after they figure out a solution.
My Project
Having a reassuring classroom environment during these unprecedented times is essential for student success. I will be using materials such as bean bag chairs, stools, and a sofa to create an engaging and encouraging classroom. It will be two years since these students have left their homes and come to school full time. I want to put their fears at ease by having materials that emulate their comforts from home.
Creating a sense of safety by transforming my classroom to feel like home gives a safe space to meet students' socio-emotional needs.
Once a child feels safe, their stress decreases and can concentrate on being successful in school. I want my students to feel happy and motivated to come to school every day. Student attendance is key for student success. Therefore, the more I can take away that stress, the more students can flourish in school.
