This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I Public school in a low income neighborhood in CA. All of my students receive free lunches and many kids live in non-traditional families where a relative or foster parent may be raising them. Most do not have anyone at home telling them about colleges or that they may ever be eligible to attend a college! Despite these circumstances and financial hardships, they do come each day ready to learn about the world! I have a science degree from UCSB and they love doing anything hands on and many say they love being at school to see what we will do next!

My Project

We have been practicing our drawing skills this year with regular pencils and copy paper! Having real heavyweight drawing paper and proper pencils for different effects will make my class excited about the budding artists they already are! Drawing is my passion and I want to teach them some real techniques with real equipment! We often draw using the characters from books we are reading or even an online tutor! My students are often surprised when they discover they can actually draw rather than just trace something! Drawing in our class is part of every subject area, especially science and reading!
