This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"A place for everything and everything in it's place," is attributed to Rev. Charles Goodrich.
We need to maximize the playing area in my irregularly shaped room by using storage that is created for cellos. Students will be able to store them more securely.
Our school in the Ferguson-Florissant School District serves mostly students who are below the poverty line.
They rarely have their own instruments. Young musicians use district instruments, some of which have been in the district since the 80's. They rent them for $25.00/year. Some continue to rent instruments for the 10 years that they are in the orchestra program. This is difficult for many of our parents.
Middle school is their first experience with having music classes every day. String students work very hard to learn the positions and how to produce a good sound. We are playing 2-3 part pieces by the Winter Fine Arts Festival.
My Project
Students will learn to be careful with instruments if they have a secure place to put them. A cello cart will give us a safe place to store our existing cellos.
I hope to enhance our orchestra with the foundation of a good bass line. I know that there are students who would play the double bass if we had a reliable one. The one we have now is in need of much repair.
The bass line is essential to intonation.
An in tune bass line is the foundation of good intonation and harmony. Learning these aural skills early will help string students succeed.
