My students need to know that "There is a World Out There" and read more non-fiction texts. I need Time for Kids and Weekly Reader magazines subscriptions for my students.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"There's a World Out There" - I know that and you know that, but making that fact a reality to students confined within the four walls of a classroom for 95% of the school year is indeed a challenge.
As a teacher in a high needs school in New York State.
I have been able to teach the most dedicated and hardworking students and while I love what I do, yet recently I have found myself a disenchanted because so much of what I expose them to does not apply to the real world. There is so much more for them to know, wonder about, and invest in and for this I need your help. This year I want to expose my students, who are receiving academic intervention services, to the world around them. I want my students to be informed. I want to talk to them about the real world in a way that helps them to develop compassion. Moreover, I want to enable my students to discover who they are, not only as learners, but also as stakeholders in tomorrow's world.
My Project
In order to do this is I must expose to them to the world. The most effective way to do this is through reading materials, specifically educational news magazines.
Using quality educational news magazines such as Weekly Reader and Time for Kids that touch upon current events, world history as well as science and technology, these student editions will enable my students to do some quick reading that exposes them to the real world around them. These magazines will also spark an interest and awaken a desire for them to do independent research and learn even more. The knowledge they gain through these materials will help lay the foundation for who they are to become in the future.
As part of my educational plan, these magazines would be used twice a week throughout the course of the school year, so that students can have on-going discussions about what they've read and what they are thinking.
These magazines will provide the base that is needed for them to know that what they are working for today will have an impact tomorrow.
It will help them see that there are changes to be made in the world around them.
Please help my students see that “There’s A World Out There” by funding these weekly magazine subscriptions.
