My students are as diverse as they can get. They are a mix of many races and religions. Although 100% of my students receive free lunch, they come from a variety of income brackets and financial situations. Even when they walk in our classroom, they are a mix of ability levels, social/emotional maturity, and feelings about school and learning. Above all, they are children who deserve to receive the best education possible. My school is in a very nice neighborhood, so it is often misunderstood in regards to our students' needs. The neighborhood has grown past young children. Our students come mostly from run-down apartments. Our neighborhood is still very supportive and involved with our school.
My Project
Organizational skills are key to students success. My classroom is a busy place, where lots of learning takes place. Students are up and about, moving from group to group during the literacy block. It is a struggle to keep track of all the supplies, paper, and time spent on independent reading.
These supplies would help my students by providing a more efficient literacy block, where students will learn organizational skills while maintaining responsibility for their time spent on task.
My reading groups are divided up by colors, where each colored group works on a different skill. The colored trays will allow the students a specific place to put their work from the literacy block. The timers will help my students monitor how long they have been reading. They are supposed to read for 20 minutes per day but have trouble keeping track of the time. The supply caddies will make sharing and passing out supplies easier, quicker, and more organized.
