My Project

My students are resilient, determined, and real go-getters! As students in a 100% Title I funded school, there are obstacles that impede their learning each day, through no fault of their own; however, they persevere, love to learn, and make us proud each day.

As an elementary counselor in this district, I have found that several of our scholars need social and emotional coping skills to help them process their thoughts and feelings toward these obstacles.

This motivation comes in the form of small and large group counseling sessions. Through these sessions students use creative ways to express their emotions through art, reading, listening to stories, talking, and writing.

To target these coping skills, we will utilize our SEL library to discuss an array of topics. The books requested not only cover the areas of calming down, listening to others, and focusing on learning, but they also cover grief, divorce, life after natural and unnatural disasters, dealing with loss, bullying, waiting your turn, test anxiety, peer pressure, and accepting students with uncommon medical diagnoses.

Reading relatable stories during group counseling is one of the best interventions I can use to improve positive behaviors and interactions among students. This is a time to share strategies for dealing with stressors as well as listen to how these stressors affect each of us in different or the same ways.

These books will help me to create a diverse and inclusive classroom SEL library. They will provide a window for students to see themselves and hopefully understand that no matter the emotion, thought, or feeling, you are never an island. There is always someone that can relate to you, whether it's a student that is near or an author that is far.
