My Students

How do you teach children to love and read books when the library is shut down? My students are new readers and need to be exposed to a variety of enjoyable books.

My students are 25 very eager five and six year olds (Kindergarten).

These children are overcoming challenges every day, as they grow up in a very low income (free lunch) school in a suburb of Los Angeles,California. My students will be learning to read for the first time and I want to provide them every available opportunity. Unfortunately, due to district cuts our school will not have a school library. With the limitation of no library or computer lab time, I feel my students will be limited in options. My students want to read and learn and unfortunately I can't sit with each student as much as they need. So the tag system will allow the children to read books independently and will help them develop stronger reading and comprehension skills

My Project

I am hoping to expand my students exposure to literature through a few book series and interactive reading books. Knuffle Bunny is a cute new series, with adorable and fun characters. I recently read one of the books to another child and I knew I wanted the books for my students. The Little Old Lady books are funny and great for rhyming and sequencing. These books relate to holidays, seasons and some of our science topics. I would like to get each of the books in this series, to read one each month. I have great art projects and sequencing activities that tie in with these stories. Finally I am asking for some LeapFrog LeapPad apps. We have two great Leappads in our classroom. The children use these for writing, taking pictures and doing reading activities. The Leappads are very limited and are in need of many online activities. I am hoping to get some applications for the two Leappads.

I am asking for the children's book series Knuffle Bunny and The Little Old Lady Who Swallowed A..... I am also asking for some applications for the Leapfrog Leappads.

The Leappads are often used in the classroom to help new readers and beginning writers. We will not have a school library, due to cuts, so I am hoping to expand my classroom library in many different ways.
