Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher in East Palo Alto, CA. We are comprised of primarily Hispanic and African-American Students, 90% of whom are on free or reduced lunch.
Through school funds and out of my own pocket, I have been able to build up my classroom library of books. But there is much more to read than just books.
My students and I lack the resources to bring real life and more interesting text into our classroom. I would like my 20 students to have the opportunity to read magazines that interest them. I would also like them to be exposed to functional text, like recipes and cookbooks.
Everyday, my students D.E.A.R. - drop everything and read - for 20-30 minutes. During this time, they would read the magazine of their choice and read recipes.
Reading magazines and recipes will help improve their writing skills and their math skills. Having these items in the classroom will broaden their exposure to other mediums and improve test scores.
