My students need one Discover Robotics and Programming Kit with LabCards and two iPad packages (32 GB iPad+Case) to explore the world of robotics as they use skills to improve oral comprehension and verbal expression.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have had the pleasure of working with a wonderful group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders whose love to learn shines despite obstacles that make learning difficult. I am going on knowing them for 3 years as their Speech-Language Therapist. The students I work with from these grade levels have been identified as having a language disorder that impacts their ability to comprehend oral information and verbal expression. Some of these students also struggle with learning disabilities.
Despite all of these challenges they face, they light up and are eager to learn when novel, exciting opportunities are presented to them.
They learn in different ways and require many opportunities to practice in order to learn strategies to compensate for their weaknesses. Although they have mixed interests, technology is a shared fascination. When they accomplish a task using their newly learned strategies, you can see a sense of pride and hope in their expressions.
My Project
You've heard of therapy animals, but how about therapy robots?! I am requesting materials to turn junior high speech-language therapy into a robotics club. The PRC Edventures Discover Robotics Kit will be the source of motivation and student buy-in to help these students with language disorders practice oral comprehension and verbal expression skills that they are weak in and need to develop for successful classroom learning. The kit will afford students repeated opportunities to communicate with each other in collaboration groups as they work on learning how to build and program the robot using the LabCards. It will require them to sharpen their active listening skills, use contextual clues to comprehend the unfamiliar words and make inferences. As they construct ideas and learn the programming language, they will inadvertently work on strategies to enhance abilities needed to use domain specific vocabulary in meaningful ways. They will use language skills to problem solve issues. Ultimately, the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will collaborate and perform for lower grades either through developing an original play or reenacting a favorite childhood book using the robot. Students will learn to adapt their speech for the presentation to younger students, gain experience with presenting, and learn narrative structures. The iPads are needed to use the program to control the robot. Help me knock the socks off of these students by providing intensive and comprehensive learning opportunities in a unique way!
