Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This school year has been filled with many changes and exciting lessons. 6th, 7th, and 8th grade are tough, but fun years. My students try their hardest despite their academic and behavioral issues. It is my hope to instill in them the knowledge to get them through their last years in elementary school, as well as to prepare them for high school and beyond. I strive to create a warm, safe, and welcoming learning environment where every student feels successful and loved.
I teach in a low-poverty neighborhood in Chicago.
My students are predominately Hispanic and African American. All of them receive special education services for academics and/or behavior. Although they struggle on a daily basis, they are motivated to do well and strive to work to their highest potential. They are hard working and excited to learn. My 6th, 7th and 8th graders deserve the best education, materials, technology, and books that I can get for them. I want their last years in elementary school to be filled with many academic achievements and great memories.
My Project
Our school is trying something new for quarter 2. We are allowing all students to choose an activity each Friday to complete. The activities range from karate, to computer games, to arts and crafts. I am not an artsy person, but I love coloring and I think the therapeutic effects of coloring are amazing.
I want to create an environment for students to come de-stress, calm down, and release any tension through coloring.
I plan to have a variety of pictures to color, markers to use, and music to listen to. I want to create a calm environment with relaxing lighting, calming music, and stress free activities. The markers will be used to color different pictures and the coloring books will be used for the students to choose what they want to color. The different lights will be used to create a calm, anxiety free atmosphere for the students to de-stress and relax.
Supporting my project will allow my diverse learner students and general education students to have an opportunity to de-stress in a way they may not have tried before. Thank you for supporting my project and my students!
