Then the Best Friend Hit on the Boyfriend, But He Said--

My kids need three copies of each of the novels in the Bluford High series.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Almagor's classroom raised $130

At KIPP DC: AIM Academy, kids and adults are doing WHATEVER IT TAKES to close the achievement gap!!!!! Our students come in WAY behind grade level... but they attend school from eight until five every day, plus every other Saturday, plus most of the summer, plus two hours of homework a night, plus reading at every spare moment... and they catch up. (If you're interested in the numbers: The first class of KIPP DC alumni went from the 23rd to the 74th percentile in reading and the 34th to the 96th percentile in math between fifth and eighth grade. Around the 70th percentile is considered on track for college.) We want our kids to genuinely love books and identify as readers -- not just scan for correct test answers. Our kids read before school, during meals, between activities, and even while walking in the hallways. (The occasional collision or chocolate-milk-stained page -- totally worth it!) And my kids -- even the ones who struggle with reading -- LOVE LOVE LOVE the Bluford High series. They're very short and very easy to read. But they're about high school kids and way melodramatic, so kids feel "grown up" when they read them. They appeal to both boys and girls. The prose isn't half bad. And there are eight in the series, so a kid who successfully reads one can read a whole bunch more -- and build a whole lot more confidence -- before moving on to something more challenging. Kids love to share these books with their friends, hence the title of this proposal. I bought the first four books at the beginning of the year. They've been in constant rotation, and unfortunately, life in a seventh grader's backpack is pretty rough. They're missing covers and pages and are no longer usable. The ten or so kids who read them are clamoring for the rest of the series -- and other 65 kids want to know what all the fuss is about! Please help me give the readers what they want: Three brand-new copies of each Bluford High novel.
