My Project

Imagine a classroom filled with eager high school students, each holding a copy of Zora Neale Hurston’s timeless novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God. The powerful story of Janie Crawford’s journey toward self-discovery and independence provides a rich exploration of identity, resilience, and the search for her voice — themes that resonate deeply with our students!

By funding this project, you will provide each student in my English classes with their own copy of this literary classic.

Having personal copies allow students to engage more deeply with the text, annotate passages, and develop a love for the book. Your support will not only supply essential reading materials but also spark meaningful discussions about race, gender, and the power of storytelling.

My students are bright, curious, and passionate learners from diverse backgrounds in Pittsburgh. They are eager to read stories that reflect varied cultural experiences and narratives. Hurston’s novel will not only broaden their literary horizons but also provide an inspiring example of a strong, independent female protagonist in African American literature.

Our classroom currently lacks a sufficient number of this essential text, limiting our ability to engage in a shared reading experience. With your support, we can provide each student with a copy of Their Eyes Were Watching God, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in Hurston’s beautifully crafted prose and compelling storytelling.

Your contribution will go directly toward purchasing 60 copies of Their Eyes Were Watching God. Your support will make it possible for each student to have their own book to read, annotate, and keep, fostering a personal connection to this important work of literature.
