Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Oh the places you'll go, today is your day!" is the Dr. Seuss quote I teach by in my classroom. I tell my students that reading is an adventure. They can go anywhere, and pretend to be any character, when they read. My project incorporates literacy with theatrics, to take them on this adventure.
My school is a Title 1 school with the majority of students on free or reduced lunch.
Most students can not afford books or school supplies. Many do not have assistance at home with literacy because parents are working or speak a different language. As a result, they come to school and struggle with reading. They then become frustrated and eventually stop showing effort and the desire to read. What they need is motivation and guidance offered through a supportive learning environment.
My Project
One of the supplies for this project to start with is the Good Manners book set. These read aloud books will help teach the children how to work as a team when at daily literacy centers. After reading the books, students can role play, with their handmade puppets, appropriate manners and inappropriate manners in class. Then when reading the Reader's Theater scripts they can act out the characters' parts for an exciting way to practice reading fluency and expression. The last supply on the list, the nonfiction texts, will take students on a reading adventure around the world to learn facts about various topics. They can then present the information they learned to their peers with the hand puppets or through body movement.
Through your donations this project will help students see reading in a whole new light.
Reading is not always about sitting and reading silently, but can also be incorporated through dramatic play and theatrics. This will motivate students to have the desire to read books throughout the day with their peers. When motivation and enthusiasm increase, then reading fluency and comprehension will too. Improving students' reading abilities prepares them for a lifetime of success!
