My Students

What motivated you to be successful? I teach Theatre Arts to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in an urban middle school in Southern California that is under-resourced. I need your help to motivate my students to excel in my class and inspire them to stay in school.

We are a Title I public middle school, with a population of 1,100 students who all qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Our school is in the middle of some of the toughest neighborhoods in the south Los Angeles area; an area typically known for its gang affiliations, easy access to drugs, poverty stricken neighborhoods, and with bad examples at every street corner. The high school next door to our middle school, where they will most likely go, has a 65% graduation rate. Which statistically means that possibly 4 out of 10 of my students may not graduate with a high school diploma. Despite all of this, my students tell me that they all want to go to college one day and they have big dreams for the future. Studies have shown that students will make the decision to stay in school or drop out while still in middle school. That's why staying motivated right now is so important and helps the most in closing the achievement gap.

My Project

In my Theatre Arts class, students work together in collaborative groups to earn points for being on time to class, bringing all of their class supplies, doing their daily reading homework, participating in theatre activities, and following our classroom behavior expectations. In Theatre Arts we focus on improving observation skills, concentration skills, trust, imagination, self-confidence, and ensemble building skills; things that are not only important in my class, but will also lead to life skills that will help them in the future. Classes meet every other day and at the end of a two-week period, the group with the most points earns a raffle ticket. An iPad Mini and three iPod Shuffles would be fantastic prizes for this raffle and would motivate my students to do their best each and every day.

By motivating students to do well in my class, you are also motivating them to succeed in education and in learning for life.

Students are far less likely to drop out of school if they feel successful and a part of a group that works to help them become their best. My Theatre Arts class can help to do this with your help in motivating them. You can help make a difference in the lives of my students and stop them from becoming one more statistic in the drop out rate.
