Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 9th and 10th graders enrolled in Theater Arts with an emphasis on costume design. The demographic breakdown of the 3,693 students enrolled in 2013-2014 was: Asian/Pacific Islanders - 13.7%, black - 16.9%, Hispanic - 45.4%, white - 21.4%, and multi-racial - 2.4%.
We have small learning communities to make the school setting "smaller" for this large urban population.
My students are new to sewing in general and have little experience (and resources) to help them navigate the goals of this class. Most are in the pathway, Drama, Media, Arts, Communication (DMAC), so this class will support their experiences in advanced theater and improv for the next couple of years.
My Project
My students and I are creating a Theater Arts Costume Design class with no materials other than machines that are easily 15 years old. We need basic sewing supplies such as Wooden embroidery hoops, sewing thread, muslin, scissors, needles, seam rippers, tape measures, fabric and zippers.
Students will use these supplies to create small projects and eventually costumes for the school play and musical.
Many have little to no experience with sewing and have no supplies. More than half of my school's student body is on free and reduced lunch, so they may not have the funds to pay for these type of incidentals.
The outcomes I hope for in this class are for students to be able to create at least one garment for personal use, handmade gifts, and to support the costuming for the school's plays and musicals.
