Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a School Support Specialist working for Boys Town with a specific focus on at-risk youth. This includes students exhibiting challenging behaviors both at school and home, grappling with attendance issues, and demonstrating low self-control. A key aspect of my role is collaborating closely with educators, administrators, counselors, and families to pinpoint students in need of assistance.

My approach involves imparting essential social and coping skills, diffusing disruptive behaviors, fostering emotional management, nurturing problem-solving abilities, instilling accountability, and empowering students to advocate for themselves.

Within our school environment, we have a dedicated space known as the "Zen Room," providing students a sanctuary for regaining composure during moments of distress or frustration.

Introducing tools such as the "Calm Ball" can aid students in developing healthy coping mechanisms while strengthening their social-emotional learning. Fidgets are another valuable resource utilized by students to alleviate stress and bolster concentration. Furthermore, incorporating calming corner posters into our Zen Room will serve as a positive reinforcement tool, offering uplifting affirmations and facilitating the practice of various breathing exercises.

Moreover, providing snacks during my weekly social skill groups can prove beneficial in encouraging student engagement, attentiveness, and interaction. This initiative also offers support to those students who may have missed breakfast or lunch, ensuring they have the energy needed to participate fully.

Despite the myriad challenges these students face at home and within themselves, witnessing their dedication and progress towards achieving their objectives throughout the academic year, is truly rewarding.
