The Year's Almost Over, but We Aren't Yet!

My students need more ink for our wireless printer! Even though the year is almost over, we still have lots of work to do!

My Students

Imagine walking into a school built before 1907. What do you see? Do you see dilapidated facilities, broken windows, or a lack of resources? How about a black, eight-foot fence and gate encasing the building that a child is supposed to love coming to? How inviting is that?

The picture in your mind is the safe utopia that I create every day for my fifth-grade students, in their violence-plagued neighborhood.

One hundred percent of our kids receive free breakfast and lunch every day. We also provide them with a free healthy snack each morning. On Fridays, backpacks of food go home for the weekends. Clearly, we are a very high-need community who does so very much with so very little. As soon as the door opens to our school, our families realize that they are invited and welcomed.

We may not have the material goods, but we are a family, and we have plenty of love. My fifth graders have high potential, but getting them to realize that is difficult. I know how incredible they are, but many of them are too discouraged to believe me.

My Project

Last year, we were lucky enough to have a grant that we wrote accepted, one that allows each student in our classes to have their own iPad for school use. While this allows them endless possibilities, we get stuck at one point, and this project could "unstick" us.

After we spend countless hours typing, whether it's a slide show or a poster or an essay of some kind, we really have no way to print out what we have created.

The one printer that we share with the class next door isn't wireless and none of the iPads can easily print to it. By allowing us to have access to a printer, the kids can now print out and hang up or bring home to show their families the products that they have worked so hard to create.
