Our high school is made up of approximately 1000 students, grades 9-12. We have around 90% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite resources in the school and families sometimes being tight, our students are passionate about their learning. As a first-year high school librarian, my goal is to continue to build our library into the school’s informational and community hub.
Embracing empathy and developing compassion are two important goals for our students.
With your help, students will have award-winning literature for book clubs that support healthy discussions and literature that will help us learn, grow and change. Each student deserves to learn and grow at their own rate and speed. We need resources that will grab the student’s attention and take them from where they are - to where they can be!
My Project
After a long year of hybrid/remote/masked mode, students need the chance to TALK to and INTERACT with their peers about what they are reading! These book clubs will allow students to read and discuss high-interest literature in the safe, relaxed atmosphere of the library. In addition, because studies show that students are more likely to re-read books that they own, at the end of each club, participating students will get to keep their books. This project will not only contribute to student reading, but it will also help students build their own personal libraries that they can continue to enjoy for years to come.
Book clubs offer a way for students who don't usually participate in school activities to be a part of something.
Students also get the chance to analyze plots, express their opinions, and share their conclusions about something they are passionate about--reading!
By contributing to these book clubs, you are providing a place for students to cultivate a lifelong love of reading and learning. As the moderator of these mostly student-led book clubs, I will facilitate and model life skills, such as conducting respectful discussions and urging students to be self-aware about offering speaking time to all participants.
