The “Write” Stuff

Help me give my students some sturdy write and wipe lapboards and erasers, as well as, four take-home backpacks to use for our literacy centers.

My Students

I have been teaching kindergarten for 28 years in an amazing school, which is located in a low income community. Despite the often sad circumstances some of my students face, they are beating the odds every day. My students are bright, friendly, and extremely eager to learn new things. They love to explore and learn through play and hands-on experiences, which is the way it should be for a group of 5 and 6-year-olds.

With the current trend being all about test scores and less about letting kids be kids, I feel it is my duty to make learning as meaningful and engaging as I can for my students, while also making it fun!

My Project

In my kindergarten classroom, we use write and wipe lapboards on a daily basis for graphics practice (letter and number formation), shared scaffolded writing, word work, and for some of our literacy centers games. As you can imagine, these boards need to be very sturdy to hold up to this much wear and tear. I believe these Lakeshore lapboards are just what we need. I think my students would love to have the little write and wipe erasers to use during these times as well. They can be just like the teacher with their own little eraser just like mine.

Having the right tools will make these essential writing and learning times even more enjoyable and successful!

We will use the red and green take-home backpacks as props for dramatizing the Magic Treehouse books upon which our new play-based kindergarten curriculum is based. Jack will be able to have a new backpack to hold his notebook in each of our six centers.
