Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th grade students are wonderful, bright children who try very hard to succeed in school. Unfortunately, they come from a rural, low economic community and don't always have the resources or support at home that they require to do their best. You don't know how often the question, "why didn't you do your homework?", has been answered with, "because I didn't have a pencil at home". These children struggle with so much more than making good grades. Many of them have responsibilities and problems that no 5th grader should have. A lot of them are doing well to be able to make it to school everyday.
I teach at a Title I school in Florida where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
I try to provide as many resources and supplies as I can for my students because I know most of their families cannot. This year I have 25 students in my class and am finding it hard to afford the resources needed for this many students. I desperately want them to succeed in school and life. I need the generosity of others to get more resources to make this happen.
My Project
My students will use the Just Write! books from Scholastic and writing center activities from Lakeshore to become more polished writers. These resources will be tools the students can use to become successful.
My students this year are struggling with basic writing concepts such as: indentation, introductions, capitalization, punctuation, and writing to a task.
They desperately need these resources to become better writers.
Many of my students have a story to tell or a voice to be heard, but they can't express themselves in writing clearly yet. I might have the next J.K. Rowling or Stephen King in my class, but at this point wouldn't be able to tell from their writing. Please help me get the resources they need to become successful.
