I have the best job in the world. I am a librarian in a school that serves almost 900 eager, curious students. The library is the heart of our wonderful school. It is is hub of activity for the many students and faculty who gather there daily. Each week, my youngest readers gather to hear stories on the rug and create related crafts. Learners in the intermediate grades write their own puppet plays based on classic texts and perform them. Talented middle school students learn about their community and propose ideas for making it better.
With the support our our amazing school community, our library sponsors six evening events per year and distributes over 1,200 free books to our school families.
Although our school is at over 75% poverty level, our school library still needs to be a welcoming space that supports all of our learners.
My youngest learners need to have a cozy, welcoming space in the library that can support the needs of early primary learners. We need to provide a "reading home" for our emerging readers.
My Project
Fourth graders are great explorers! The library is a great place for them to discover new authors; their lives and works. This unit will allow students to read an author's biography and then read one of their books. After reading, students will use Book Creator to write, illustrate and publish their own mini-masterpiece.
Picture books are the appetizers of the library!
They are the perfect way for students to explore various authors and genres.
The result of The Write Stuff will be well-read students who are eager to explore more wonderful literature.
My students have limited exposure to literature at home so our school library opens up the reading universe to them.
