My students need to see current events in their lives as well as the wider world many of them might not experience otherwise.

My Students
I teach 60 students in two different blocks every day. Some of my students are special needs, that is having an IEP for special learning accommodations. Almost 100% of my kiddos are from lower income homes. We are an AVID school where we encourage and, hopefully, prepare our students to aim for college acceptance.
I work hard every day to have them experience language and history as something relevant to their everyday lives.
Please give us a hand. Thank you.
My Project
Scholastic News gives students the opportunity to read and analyze current newsworthy stories that keep their interest. Kids can read at their own grade level and feel confident that they can carry on a written or verbal conversation about these events that are shaping their lives. Many of my students do not read a newspaper nor do they watch the news on TV. I need to help them become informed citizens.
Storyworks gives these same kids various fictional stories to give them, hopefully, a love of reading and an interest in literature.
All of us love getting “mail,” and the anticipation of the new magazines arriving at the classroom door all school year can excite them in a way their textbooks cannot.
