There really is not enough space to describe the impact that the pandemic has had the students of my Title I school in New York City. The week before we left the school we, the teaches, were preparing for Superintendent observations the week of March 16, and not online learning. Thus, we did not prepare our students for the realities of online learning not were we able to ensure that all students had the necessary technology for such an endeavor. Four weeks later, all students have some form of device, they just might not have WiFi. I was not able to give out books either.
The psychological toll on our students is really immeasurable.
Most are suffering from depression and settling into the realities of our current lives. Some students have had to start working to help support their families, some students are living in abusive homes with no respite, some students are struggling through the realities of living in homeless shelters, and all are missing school and all of the little things they never realized were important. Yet, they also demonstrate every day the resilience and strength of the human spirit.
I am requesting a globe, dry erase board, pens, pointer light, and cleaner so that I can fully show/demonstrate/explain the mechanization of world history as we learn them in our textbook. History must come to life for kids to learn, enjoy, and absorb. We are settling into remote learning and although I have purchased a wall map these supplies will help enrich the experience of my students as they continue with remote learning. All of the students discuss how difficult it is to learn by themselves - it is very very cold. The requested items will resemble our classroom and help students to more fully engage the texts and broader historical implications.
The globe will be used to teach students geography and geo-politics as we move into the history of the 20th Century, particularly the Cold War and globalization.
The whiteboard will be used to explain the content on a deeper level with visualizations and student interaction. Writing out student ideas and answering questions using the whiteboard will ensure deeper understanding from all students. The light pointer is a fun way to focus student attention and focus on certain areas on the globe/map. Your generosity will support some hard-hit students during this really difficult time with comfort objects (I use the map/globe daily in my classroom as geography is emphasized) and provide supports to their learning.
