This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My class is made up of 3-5 year olds. We are a very diverse group that introduces the different cultures for our students to learn. Our school gears towards low-income and homeless families to help provide quality education to their children. We are located at the Salvation Army's Women's Shelter to show that we support them and want to provide their children with the best education possible.
We have students that come from families that are two parent families and one parent family homes.
These are parents who are very supportive in and out of the classroom.
In providing these materials it will help enhance our science area so the students will become more engaged. What better way to get them engaged then doing a unit that kids love the most-Exploring bugs! These materials will help students to become aware of the difference bewteen insects and spiders and the way these creatures are helpful in our environment.
These materials will allow the students to use their critical thinking skills to learn the differences of insects and spiders and how they play a part in our environment.
They will have hands on activities like the butterfly garden and ladybug garden to see the life cycles of some insects. This will allow them to do observations and determine the hyothesis of these two insects. Not only will these materials help us enhance our science area but it allow us to touch on other learning skills like math and language. For instance the bug counters and hands on math trays will help with learning about patterns, sorting by size and color and venn diagram tray to tell what is the same and what is different. With the Shake and Reveal Science Cards, it will help with language skills by getting the students to predict the question being asked on the card and then shaking the card to see if their predictions were correct. This gets the students talking and building on the "WH" questions to get the students using their critical thinking skills; as well as incoroprating books on insects and spiders to build on their vocabulary to learn words like anatomy, entomology, metamorphosis, larvae , chrysalis, etc.
This project will allow us as teahers to help our preschoolers to develop an early interest in science and learning about insects and spiders by providing serveral hands on experiments and activities.
