Help me give my students these canvases to promote relationships and learning! We use these materials to build an art community that extends into our entire school climate.
My students love to paint and draw on canvases. They are "real art" and something that is ready to hang or give as a gift. The level of engagement when they have a canvas to work on far surpasses any other material. I think the fact that they come from predominantly low income homes plays into this engagement. The canvases are more sophisticated than just paper and really resonate as "grown up" with my students.
I find that having canvas available without stress or high pressure expectations helps me build relationships with students.
These relationships help foster both a strong and safe school community. In my art classes I want students to feel safe, welcome and excited about school. By getting a little extra "love" in the art room they are ready to really push themselves in the academic classes.
