This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'd like my East Harlem fifth graders to discover the theater. However, I'm not proposing to take them to a Broadway Show. Instead, I want to bring the theater to them. I wish to have a teaching artist work with my students, in my classroom, this coming year.
By bringing the added confidence of performance into the classroom, learning will be enhanced in a unique way. Theater encourages reading, writing and comprehension skills. Further, theater demands focus and commitment from students. It also encourages students to develop or increase their creativity.
The goal of this residency program is to enhance the current curriculum with the role of the theater and the skills of acting for the stage. Once a week, for ten weeks, a teaching artist, who received her MA from NYU's prestigious Tisch School, will work with my students to experience the theater by developing characters and creating individual stories which each student will personally build.
This past spring, thanks to the generosity of another donor, I was able to bring a teaching artist to the classroom. After the ten weeks she spent with us, my shy students finally spoke up in class and all of the children became more articulate when they spoke. Further, many of them have decided that they'd like to pursue acting as a career. I could go on and on about the amazing results, but there isn't enough space here for me to share all of that with you. However, should you decide to fund a theater residency for my incoming fifth grade class this fall, you can be sure that you will truly see the results from the photos and letters we will send to you at the end of the residency.
Thank you, in advance, for your generosity in bringing a theater resident into my fifth grade classroom.
