Ms. Haguewood from Oxford MS is requesting Computers & Tablets through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need tablets to learn and explore countries and historical figures.
Living in one of the poorest states in the country, and teaching at a county school, sometimes dreams are left in the dark. Imagination and creativity are pushed to the side because those things aren't attainable; however, in my class I encourage the dreamers to come to life. My motto every year is "If you can dream it, you can do it!" - Walt Disney.
I want every child that leaves my class to know that if they put in the work, then they can achieve their dreams.
I want them to know that just because they are from a certain place, doesn't mean they can't be the next president, the next gold medalist in an olympic event, or even the next Katy Perry! That's why putting so many different places and people in front of them is crucial at this age.
My students come to class eager to learn. I plan to keep it that way. I hope they have so much fun learning in my class that if one day they become not so eager or discouraged in their education, they'll be able to think back to this time and remember that learning is what you make it.
Teaching at a county school is one of the most rewarding opportunities I'll ever have. I love my students and where I work, but we need more technology! Our world is too fast paced and dependent on technology to not be familiarizing our kids with it every day.
I feel that not putting technology in children's hands may put them at a disadvantage in the future.
Not only will they benefit from everyday uses of a tablet, but I plan on showing them the world. I have subscribed to NearPod, a website endorsed by my school. You can take virtual field trips and meet historical figures from all different times. I will be able to assess students and they will receive immediate feedback. Not to mention create power points on lessons so they can have see right in front of their faces and have access to videos that show visuals and step by step instructions.
Don't get me wrong. I don't think the only thing they should be using during the school day is a tablet. I love hands on activities and lots of movement for my 7 year olds! I just think there is a great benefit to opening their minds to a whole new world that's out there and that they may not ever actually get a chance to see otherwise.
