Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are exploring themselves and their worlds. Their writing is interesting and relevant. Often their writing is accompanied by illustrations and photos. As they learn new things and develop new interests they are sharing through various artistic mediums. Photography is a new interest that a lot of them have developed. They are sharing their worlds and how they see themselves in it. This makes it easier to get them to complete writing assignments. As we work on improving our writing skills I want to motivate them to continue to work hard. Encouraging this new found interest is another way to do this.

We are a Title I school.

The majority of the students come from economically disadvantaged homes; 97% are minorities, 87% ESOL, and 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our students work hard and are now openly exploring their feelings and opinions as they work. This is a creative time for them.

My Project

My project is to create a mini photography lab in our classroom. I would like to allow my students to fully explore the art of photography and illustration. A photo lab could create new possibilities and open doors for them in so many ways. We have a mac book and a desktop. Photoshop and illustration software, as well as other supplies would enable us to make the most of them.

Students have created interesting visuals to accompany their writing submissions this term.

This lab is for those students who have no trouble completing writing assignments and those who might need a little incentive. Once we're back in school, they'll be able to edit the photos and artwork they're submitting now like professionals. Knowing that they have the tools to increase the quality of their illustrations and photos they've attached to their stories would be a wonderful treat and additional motivation for them. We have a spot dedicated to showcasing student work in our school. My students will look forward to displaying their work and be proud to do so in that area.
