The World as Viewed Through a Photogate

My students need 9 photogates to be able to measure the speed of moving objects. This will allow them to complete hands-on lab activities that involve inquiry learning. As a small, rural school, we do not have the technology resources of larger schools. My students enter careers or college having to catch up with other students.

We are a small, rural school that struggles to give students 21st Century skills. I teach physical science including introductory chemistry and physics. All freshmen in my school are required to take this class to prepare them for future careers or higher education. As a small, rural school in Iowa, we do not have a large tax base that provides students with a lot of hands on activities. A large percentage of my students are on free/reduced lunches making us a high-need community.

Our high school has an extremely limited supply of science laboratory equipment. Students are unable to learn many topics through hands-on activities because we don't have anything for them to put their hands on. The few supplies we do have are limited so students must work in larger groups to complete activities. This sometimes prohibits students from having the time they need to understand all parts of an activity if their group moves on without them. My students will have to work harder to catch up to other students when they go to college because they will have to learn how to use technology that other students already understand. This may cause frustration and a lack of confidence that results in dropping out of school or not choosing to pursue a career in the sciences.

We need equipment to provide our students with inquiry-based, hands on activities. They need experience working with equipment; not only so they understand how to use this specific equipment, but so they have the experience and confidence to know they can overcome learning any technology they are unfamiliar with. The photogates I will purchase through this project will allow them to study many properties of moving objects including velocity, acceleration, and energy. They will learn more about how matter responds to energy and how to control situations that might seem random and unpredictable.

Your donation will make it possible for my students to build essential skills necessary to life in the 21st century. They will learn problem solving strategies and build confidence in these skills. You can help them learn to love science because they can study it up close instead of only reading about it in textbooks. This can lead them to pursue careers in science and related fields that can help move our country into the future with new developments and discoveries in medicine, technology, energy resources and much more.
