My Students

Nonfiction is so important because students need to learn more about the world around them as well as become critical thinkers. Thus, it is important that they are exposed to many different forms of nonfiction.

As I tell my students the first week of school, they are the most important people in the world.

This is because they will be the ones changing the world. They will be the doctors, lawyers, teachers, and politicians of the future. My students live in the southeast part of Los Angeles. About 96% of students receive free or reduced lunch. Ours is a charter school that focuses on all students going to college. My classroom is named after the University of Illinois where I went to college. Within the last month, my “just out of third graders,” have really transformed into fourth graders. They are thinking critically, asking questions, and taking risks. They have stepped up to the plate and are challenging each other to do their best for the sake of learning. This group is a very special group. While many students are below grade level in reading, they all have the will to improve their reading. They believe in our classroom as a learning community.

My Project

Time for Kids will change my students’ lives because they love learning about the world. Because of our budget, we do not get to go on lots of field trips to experience the world first hand. Time for Kids magazine can help them read about the world and about important current events. It is important for them to understand what is happening in our countries and other countries, so that they can think critically about how their actions impact the world. If you have ever seen a pack of Time for Kids magazines brought into a classroom, you would see pure joy on the children’s faces. They love to look through the articles and text features that help them to learn about current events and topics. Students being able to read fluently is proven to be an important part of literacy. In order for students to truly be able to read nonfiction well, they need to be able to read fluently. The fluency kit includes many reading levels, which will be able to meet the needs of all students in my class.

If you fund this project, I guarantee you that students who are reading two to three years below grade level will be on or above grade level by the end of the year!!

Students at our school grow so much because of the rigorous environment. Help us to make it even more rigorous with nonfiction supplies!
