As I tell my students the first week of school, they are the most important people in the world. This is because they will be the ones changing the world. They will be the doctors, lawyers, teachers, and politicians of the future. My students live in the southeast part of Los Angeles. About 96% of students receive free or reduced lunch. Ours is a charter school that focuses on all students going to college. My classroom is named after the University of Illinois where I went to college. Within the last month, my “just out of third graders,” have really transformed into fourth graders. They are thinking critically, asking questions, and taking risks. They have stepped up to the plate and are challenging each other to do their best for the sake of learning. This group is a very special group. While many students are below grade level in reading, they all have the will to improve their reading. They believe in our classroom as a learning community.
