Do you remember walking into your high school for the first time? Now imagine walking into that high school not having the ability to communicate with anyone around you. For some of my students, that is their reality.
My students attend an urban high school right in the middle of downtown.
They are from all around the world and have come together to engage in the language, culture, and life of the American people. Many of them are refuges who escaped from bad situations. Most of them are receiving free or reduced lunches. All of them need strong support with the English language. Now, they want to learn!! These are beautiful, young people who have the potential to inspire, motivate and accomplish great things!
My Project
I am requesting 5 tablets and 5 cases to help them speak, listen, read, and write the English language. I would like to use technology to provide access to my students' curriculum. There is a plethora of apps available to people who want to educate themselves. I would use the tablets to help my students increase their conversational skills (both listening and speaking), their reading scores, and provide a very modern way of understanding the content taught in my class, as well as their other seven classes. We will use virtual multi-lingual dictionaries, the camera and other recording apps, English-as-a-Second-Language specific apps, handwriting programs, reading exercises, and writing apps.
I have found great success with past students who have had access to such technology.
In my last school, we use tablets on a very regular basis. Unfortunately, my current school does not have the funds for such a project. I know that I can create unique, applicable, and engaging lessons trough the use of the tablets to help my non-English speaking students bloom to their fullest potential!
