My students need these wonderful books by Eric Carle to help me implement lessons from science to art to basic social skills, an apple keyboard, and a document camera.

My Students
To me, the work of Eric Carle opened up the world children's literature. His amazing illustrations captivated me from page 1. His words, simple and plain, resonated in me and drew me in further. I use his books, and my passion for them, to teach my students everything from science to art.
I work in a NYC DOE District 75 school, meaning all of the students are severely disabled, either physically or intellectually.
It is a high school/ occupational training center which is solely geared toward post graduation (21 years old). All of my students are classified as having autism, some more severe than others. But I see potential in every one of them. They have there own personalities and idiosyncrasies as any other human being. I do my best to bring out the best in each one.
My Project
I am requesting many books from Eric Carle's collection because I have used them throughout the years as a resource to teach subjects including science, social studies, mathematics, social skills and ALWAYS art. I have found that his illustrations captivate my students and have had many beautiful products produced by my students over the years. By trying to imitate his work, I have found my students creating beautifully abstract pieces of art. In teaching students with autism, art is always an important component to understanding and expression.
Recently, as we were reading and making art work for "The Very Busy Spider", one of my students blurted "Casey likes this." Casey is his friend in another class. I asked "What can we do about it?" He said,"Read it to Casey". With that idea, our project took off. Once a week, my class goes into another class to read and do art work with other students using one of Eric Carle's books. I am asking ABC Family to help me get the resources I need.
ABC Family has helped so many important projects get funded and I hope they will consider mine.
What this project can give to my students and others, is immeasurable. The socialization among the students alone, is worth everything. Children and young adults within this population have deficits in basic social skills. By offering them opportunities to interact with others is facilitating and promoting this skill, and will serve them as they become adults and look to a more independent life.
