Help me give my students a place to store their items while in my class with the cubbies. The supplies and copy paper will help them learn in a variety of ways. Using color to organize their thoughts.
My students are unique and special in so many ways, but the most significant is that they are labeled as special by almost every adult in their lives. Their teachers, their administrators, even their parents, many of these people don't even know what that means to them and how they must navigate so many negative connotations because of the label. These adults make decisions for them and expect them to meet goals that are not always achievable due to minor disabilities. These students are repeatedly asked to learn in ways that does not work for them. All the while being held to a standard that cannot be obtained using conventual methods. They have been given devices that do not promote learning, rather giving them access to diversions and distractions. I believe in them, but they need in person and individualized attention to get the education they need to be successful.
These students require options in their classrooms to accommodate their disabilities.
They use objects to help them focus on the subject they are learning. When those items are not available they tend to become disruptive and do not allow the learning process to continue for anyone.
My Project
Many of my students struggle with organizational skills. Having a place for their items when they are in my classroom will give them a way to keep their things together and well maintained. Teaching them while they are young to find non-traditional ways to learn is vital.
Other obstacles such as focusing and differentiating topics can be addressed using color coding.
Having supplies such as markers and colored pencils available will encourage my students to look for and find learning methods that will enable them to be successful. They see how life can be approached in a different way and add their own spin to make it adaptable to their individual needs.
