The Wonder of Chemistry Lab

My Students

History is integrated all across the curriculum at the school I teach at. My students love seeing history come alive in the classroom and the connections they can make in all of the core subjects with history. They love when history is told as a story and when literature, hands-on activities, and Socratic Seminars are used. They also enjoy seeing each major event in history displayed on a timeline that is required in all of the classrooms at our school.

The resources for history are limited as our school is small and opened up two years ago.

The 6th graders study the Middle Ages, which is a fun time period to learn about. When the lessons are interesting, they engage in their learning and get excited about it. They also excel at encouraging each other in their learning.

My Project

Middle school chemistry is a wonderful way to open up students' eyes to the wonder of stuff around them and how chemistry impacts their lives on a daily basis. My seventh grade students are learning chemistry this year, but we do not have access to many lab materials that would make learning about chemistry filled with wonder and excitement.

We are starting off with the history of alchemy and how it impacted chemistry and one of the experiments I would like to do with them is changing pennies into "silver" and "gold" through a chemical reaction.

The materials include what is needed for this experiment along with other materials that would help us be able to set up an actual chemistry lab in the classroom. Without these materials, the chemistry experiments we can do this year will be very limited.

I would love to expose my students to the wonder of chemistry and help them see it in action. These lab materials would help us be able to do many amazing chemistry experiments throughout this school year and I get excited thinking about the many possibilities for investigating chemistry if we had access to the chemistry lab materials.
