My Project

Curiosity, Critical Thinking, and Creativity. These three Cs should be a focus in all classrooms so students are excited, enthusiastic, and eager to learn. The low-income and diverse students in my district should not have fewer opportunities to practice these skills because of this status and lack of access to costly technology. Many studies highlight the large gaps in language and reading skills between low-income students and students from middle or upper-income districts. Low-income districts have fewer funds to spend on teachers, curriculum, and high-level classes. Giving to this project will grant students who come through my classroom a chance to experience science and technology the way it's meant to be experienced- with joy, wonder, and curiosity.

When we give students exciting opportunities to learn something completely new we allow them to experience the joy of learning.

Coding Robots remind students there is joy in learning. This project will give students the freedom to make mistakes without the frustration or failure that often leads to disengagement.

Coding Robots will also allow my students to experience a novel way of thinking and learning. They will allow the students to use technology for something other than test-taking, practicing reading skills, or playing games. They allow students to express themselves through innovation as well as encourage an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. Students will have a chance to feel successful while completing a seemingly difficult task.

Last, these coding robots will give my students a chance to connect technology to reading! We have been reading the book "The Wild Robot" by Peter Brown. They are excited every day to hear what "Roz" will learn next. Coding Robots would be the ultimate culminating activity. It would be incredibly rewarding to surprise them with these robots.
