My Project
Imagine a classroom filled with students exploring the heartwarming and adventurous story of The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. This beautifully written book will serve as a gateway for my English Learner (EL) mentor students to develop their English skills. These students are at risk of becoming long-term English Learners, but with the right tools and support, they can thrive.
Through this project, I aim to acquire a class set of The Wild Robot to provide my students with meaningful, language-rich experiences.
As we journey through the story together, we will practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing—the core skills needed for English proficiency. My ultimate goal is to help my students reclassify and become confident, proficient English speakers.
Listening:
Students will listen to engaging read-aloud sessions, helping them develop listening comprehension and vocabulary.
Speaking:
We’ll hold group discussions, practice summarizing chapters, and share personal reflections related to the story.
Reading:
Students will practice fluency and comprehension through independent and group reading activities.
Writing:
Students will practice writing summaries, responses, and creative extensions of the story.
This project will also build their confidence and love for reading, which are crucial steps toward achieving English proficiency.
My students face significant challenges, including language barriers and limited resources. Many are at risk of not meeting the criteria for reclassification, which could limit their academic and career opportunities. The Wild Robot is not just a book—it’s a tool to unlock their potential. Its relatable themes of resilience and belonging resonate deeply with English Learners, creating a powerful connection to their language development journey.
By supporting this project, you will provide these students with the opportunity to improve their English skills through an engaging and accessible story. Your generosity will help build their confidence and proficiency, empowering them to succeed in school and beyond.
