This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I consider the entire student body to my students! I am my school's teacher librarian, and our school library is dynamic. The library is used for not only promoting literacy, but the space may be used for students who are writers one period and scientists the next! Our students range between 11-14 years old, the perfect age to hone in on foundational skills, such as organization and studying. In preparation for high school, many of our students are exploring their interests through our selection of electives, getting the extra help they need from teachers during our weekly tutorial periods, and checking out books on a regular basis.

To support the vision of our school, our library is about learning and exploration.

Students see the library as the hub of our school-- a place where everyone belongs! The library is a safe place for all students, so my goal is to maintain the integrity of our space, while also showing students the library is an another classroom on campus.

My Project

After asking students to provide feedback, many students shared the need for our library to feel more like a library. Currently, the library is a blank canvas with endless possibilities. My goal is to ensure the library is a place that promotes literacy and learning, while also being a place where students feel comfortable, and welcome.

In a time where the library seems less and less relevant, it's important for students to understand that the library is a resource that can be used now and in their future endeavors.

My cart is full of several ways to entice students to visit the library! Posters promoting reading will enhance the look of our library, as well as make students feel welcome! Likewise, hanging a "welcome" banner will let students know that they belong. For the pamphlet holder, this will be used for bookmarks. Each month, the library promotes various reading missions (i.e. genres, social initiatives, etc) and the use of bookmarks is a way to advertise what's happening in the library. The holder will give students a specific spot for easy access. Moreover, to complete our reading nook, the rug will allow for flexible seating. Students can get comfortable on the rug to read their books! Lastly, borders, and letters will allow for the creation of bulletin boards in the library, so information can be not only aesthetically pleasing but easily accessed.

In my experience, students appreciate and value an educational space that they know the teacher put an extra effort into creating. My cart reflects the effort being made to make the library the learning hub of the school!
