Help me give my students exposure to diverse voices in literature. Diversity through novels is a wonderful way to get reluctant readers on board with reading. Representation matters.

My Project
The purpose of this reading is to introduce students to diverse voices in literature. We plan on reading, discussing, and writing about Tiffany D. Jackson's The Weight of Blood, an updated take on Steven King's Carrie. A major reason to expose students to diverse novels is that it can help them to see themselves represented in literature. This can be especially important for students from marginalized groups, who may not often see themselves reflected in the books they read. When students see themselves represented in literature, it can help them to feel validated and affirmed. This is my goal when choosing novels for my class to read. Representation is a value in getting students to invest in reading. It helps reluctant readers find their reason to read.
