The Week in Focus

My students need a pocket chart and cork board to organize weekly objectives, vocabulary words, activities, and assignments.

I teach 8th grade science at a school on the Navajo reservation. My school is in a high-poverty area with a majority of our students receiving free and reduced price lunches.

My students are also primarily English Language Learners, who need extra help with English vocabulary words. On average, my students are 3 grade levels behind in reading, which means I have to spend time teaching vocabulary, in order for the 8th grade science textbook to make sense. In addition to all this, many of my students miss school to babysit, to sell jewelry, or simply because they missed the bus and have no other ride. To make up for these missed days, I try to create organizational systems to help my students learn missed information and turn in assignments.

By using a pocket chart and bulletin board, I hope to do two things: 1. to create a weekly organizer including our vocabulary words, daily objectives, assignments, and activities and two. I will create a "word wizard" board where students will earn points for using words like "experiment", "variable", or "mass" in their speech.

By funding my project, you will be helping about 130 8th graders to improve their vocabulary. This will not only help them in science, but it will help them to catch up in reading and speaking. The vocabulary my students gain with your help will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
